What should I charge for my first freelance writing job?

I'll be writing for a green real estate community who needs some new verbiage for their sales letters. Southern Living magazine is building one of their "idea houses" at this community, and the company needs content reflecting that. I imagine the project will take 3-5 hours work time (including revisions) and not including 30 minutes travel and an hour of meeting time…

i got resources below for some guideline that you might need.
i got more resources at my profile if you need other info related to online freelancing and online biz. hope that helps a bit.

where can i find a resume cover letter writing service?

Im looking for a good affordable (under $100) internet service that writes professional resumes and cover letters for sales positions (specifically: loan officer)

You can find such services at:

http://www.monster.com

http://www.careerbuilder.com

http://hotjobs.yahoo.com

Other good references are:

http://www.vault.com

http://www.wetfeet.com

Because you know yourself best, you should always first try to at least write a draft yourself. Below are some sample resumes for your reference:

http://www.resume-resource.com/samples.html

Here are some tips:
1. If you have less than 10 years of experience, you want your resume to be one page.
2. Generally, clearly show your name, mailing address, email address if available, and best phone number(s) to contact you.
3. Then show your education, work experience, any interests, achievements, and skill sets. Under your work experience, it is not a list of your job descriptions (this is a common mistake). You should instead indicate what you have accomplished and the results. Use action verbs.
4. If you are looking for your first job or intend to change job function / industry, you may want to state your objectives.
4. There is no one “correct” format. It depends on your profession and personal style.
5. Also, try not to use technical words and jargons. Do not abbreviate.

I would also go to your bookstore and find a resume book in the business/career section. You can also find more examples and templates online if you do a search.

Good luck and have a nice day.

Do you know of any free writing courses – online or other??THanks?

Depends on what sort of writing you want to do, but you'll be hard-pressed to find a free course. (Thinks: maybe I should start one.)

From the excellent construction and correct spelling of your question (and ignoring the typo 'H', it happens) I assume you're reasonably competent at constructing sentences.

In that case what you have to do is write. That might seem unhelpful, but it isn't.

You don't say what sort of writing you want to do (journalistic, fiction [long/short], reports etc) but the best way to do any of it is … to just do it.

There are lots of books on writing for all types, I'm not going to recommend any of them because they all have good points and bad points. Also some things work for some people and not others.

Still not helping? Let's try some more:

Let's say you want to write short stories. You go and find an online 'critiquing' group, you read other people's work and critique it, you write some stuff and have yours critiqued.

Writing is one skill where you have to do, and you have to "do" in vast quantities. You get to the point where writing 100,000 words is not scary because you've already written a million.

You can contact me if you want to ask anything else.

Creative Writing course online at MMU?

I am thinking of applying to do an online creative writing course. I am considering applying to Manchester Metropolitian University in the UK. Does anyone know about this course? Is it any good? Any graduates who have published their books?

I'll never understand what is the point of such a course. If one is not creative, one shouldn't be wasting time with writing, if one is creative, then all you need is will and discipline to write. And it's not likely that they pretend to instill those in you through that course, so – what's the point?

Can you give suggestions on my sales letter?

Please help me write a direct sales letter for my new business writing homestudies for attorneys whose clients plan to adopt or obtain guardianship of children. Tell me what I should change, take out or add. Thanks!

Dear Mr. Smith:

Have you ever needed a comprehensive and well-written homestudy on one of your cases and didn’t know who you should call? I’m a local Licensed Clinical Social Worker with a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Social Work. I have experience as an investigator and foster care worker for DCFS and as a counselor for XYZ Counseling Services.

What do my homestudy services include?
•Extensive Questionnaire
•Visit to the Home
•Criminal Records Check
•Reference Check
•Detailed Report
•Testimony in court

Call me today at (877) 123-4567 so we can further discuss my homestudy services. I appreciate your time and look forward to hearing from you soon.

Sincerely,

P.S. Mention this letter and receive 20% off your first homestudy!

When you say "I have experience as an investigator…" it highlights your omission of your homestudy experience (which of course is nil). Take out that line and you look stronger. I'd take out the line above it too ("I'm a local…"). You can tell them that AFTER they call you.

Your P.S. statement means nothing to me since I don't know what the base price is. 20% off of what? If I don't know, then I don't care.

Are you selling your speed, quality, or price? Decide and hit that point hard. Good Luck!
