Business writing courses – Two vital keys, and two that are given too much room!

Ever since I left my red brick businesses to focus on copywriting and sales, I have become a passionate observer of BUSINESS WRITING COURSES

These are the things that I have seen in common between most business writing courses

(a) A focus on grammar – and grammatical errors

(b) A focus on structure and logical organisation of communication.

All seem to focus on form letters – all formal. For years I lapped this up too!

For sure you cannot earn respect if you do not at least pay passing attention to grammar.

The problem is of course, this is total focus on the container – rather than the contents.

The reality is however, that what matters in effective communication is the content.

Such courses tend to ignore the fact that if the message does not get read – all that grammar and organisation are completely wasted.

I think two keys that are far more important are….

(a) A focus on why the reader should read the message -  so focussing on the benefit of reading

(b) And a focus on the psychology of why people are drawn to read on.

It is a fact that if you write your message as though it were two people talking over a coffee – the mind finds that style so much easier to read. So a great test of good writing is whether it READS OUT WELL.

So Business writing courses should focus on the psyschology and less on the structure.

You can find a summary of psychological triggers here…..
